To prevent erosion make a rock bed around the end of the tube. Screw a drain cover over the end of the tubing as it approaches daylight to keep critters out. Each drain field trench should be at least 3 to 4 feet wide and 3 to 4 feet deep. This is required to hold the pipe steady.

There should be at least 100 feet of drain field for a 1 000 gallon septic tank. The field should be at least 10 feet away from your edible garden and any water such as a lake river or well. Place in most jurisdictions inch and a half washed drain rock from a nearby gravel pit around the pipe. The perforated pipe in a gravity drain field has no slope end to end and has capped ends.

While all septic tank drain fields require regular inspection you can save a lot of money by digging one yourself. The drain or leach field is the section of the septic system that transports the waste water back to the soil. Drain field replacement can cost anywhere from 2 000 to 10 000. Where the tube passes by the downspout from the gutter we installed a y fitting and drained the roof water from the gutter system directly into the main drainage line.
