It is caused by sarcoptes mites. Mange demodicosis is an inflammatory disease in dogs caused by the demodex mite. Mange is the common term for a skin infection from microscopic mites either the scabies mite or the demodex mite. When the number of mites inhabiting the hair follicles and skin of a dog rapidly increase it can lead to skin lesions skin infections and hair loss alopecia.

Dogs may be infected if they come in contact with an infected area dogs or hosts. Unlike demodectic sarcoptic mange also known as canine scabies is a highly contagious skin infection found in dogs. The severity of symptoms depends upon the type of mite inhabiting the dog. The itching can even be so severe that it distracts the dog from necessary behavior like eating drinking and resting.

While these two mites are often grouped into the same category of mange they are quite different in their clinical presentation and treatment. Sarcoptic mange may at first appear localized to one area such as the legs tail face or ears but will then spread quickly out to the dog s entire body if not treated immediately. The dog s skin irritated from the constant scratching and biting can easily become infected. Typically the first signs of the infection will be on the margins.

Demodectic mange in dogs demodicosis is cause by the demodex canis mite. Sarcoptic mange is often first identified due to severe itching by the dog. Sarcoptic mange usually causes frantic itching.
